Zwilling J.A. Henckels is a German manufacturer of home cutlery, kitchen tools, and flatware with global distribution. The story of the Zwilling J.A. Henckels brand begins June 13, 1731 under the Gemini star sign (“Zwilling” in the German language). On that day, knife-maker Peter Henckels from the metal manufacturing center of Solingen registered the “Twin” icon as his trademark with the Cutlers’ Guild. Today this brand is well-known around the world, making it one of the oldest trademarks in the world. Today’s corporation name, Zwilling J.A. Henkels, was given to the business by a descendant of Peter Henckels, Johann Abraham Henckels. The following is a sequential listing of important dates in the corporation history.

1731
Peter Henckels lists the Zwilling J.A. Henckels trademark with the Cutler’s Guild in Solingen, Germany.

1818
Johann Abraham Henckels sets up the company’s first office in Berlin.

1851
World’s Fair in London, England. Zwilling J.A. Henckels exhibits its products, is awarded a medal and so achieves international recognition.

1883
A sales branch is established in New York City, followed a few years later by branches in Cologne, Vienna, Hamburg, Dresden, Munich and Paris.

1893
World’s Fair in Chicago, Illinois. The only medal awarded goes to Zwilling J.A. Henckels.

1905
Acknowledgment of another kind: African adventurer Leo Frobenius christens a mountain range in the Congo “Zwilling” and another one “Henckels-Mountains”.

1915
Zwilling J.A. Henckels is awarded 4 first prizes at the World Exhibition in San Francisco, California.

1938
The group opens a new stage with the introduction of its renowned multi-purpose Original Kitchen Shears, setting fresh standards in design and quality.

1939
Creation of the steel ice-hardening process FRIODUR® for the making of no-stain cutlery. This method is patented by Zwilling J.A. Henckels and subsequently all products using this exceptional method are trademarked so.

1971
